"C" the Letter of the Week!

This week we worked on the letter "C"! Luckily there are a ton of things to do with this letter. First thing that we did was have a family carnival! I come from a very big family (my mom is the eldest of ten kids), and it is now the running joke of how we are big enough to have our own carnival. A big thank you to my Mom for coming up with the idea, and putting it all together! Here are some ideas so you can throw your own family carnival, and even though we did this outside, I'm sure it can be easily made into an inside event as well. I'm going to number these so it is easier to keep track of things for the carnival.

1.) Popcorn! My Uncle Tom had an old fashioned popcorn maker that he brought to make everyone popcorn. It was yummy!

2.) Photo Booth! My Aunt Jenny bought masks, little hats, giant glasses, silly headbands, tiaras, a bow tie, and colorful mustaches for lots of funny pictures. All the kids loved it.... and so did the adults ;)

3.) A fortune telling gypsy! My sister Lindsey dressed up in an old Halloween costume, read horoscopes to the kids, and pretended to read their palms. We were going to give out fortune cookies to the kids, but we couldn't find any in town.

4.) Fishing pond! All you need is a fishing rod, a curtain, and some prizes.

5.) Duck pond! As you can see the babies decided that they would rather play in it, but it was still a big hit!

6.) Dime toss! Try to toss the dime into the cup, and win the cup that you tossed.

7.) Apple bobbing!

8.) Candy bar walk!

9.) Face painting! My Aunt Amy did a great job painting all the kids faces! Even some of the adults took part, but I don't have any pictures of that ;)

10.) Bowling!

11.) Bean bag toss!

12.) Toilet paper toss (sorry no pics!)

13.) Pop ring toss (again no pics.)

14.) Balloon darts!

15.) Snow cones!

Next on the "C" list is make a cake. This was our science experiment for the week, and also combined with Ares' father's day present to his dad. We made a lemon cake, and Ares decorated it with lemon frosting and sprinkles. Luckily we made two cakes, and he was able to "taste test" it before he gave it to his dad.

On Thursday we went to Cowtown. I have never been before which is sad since I have lived in Wichita most of my life. I was worried with all the negative reviews I had heard growing up that it wouldn't be much, but I was pleasantly surprised! We all had a ton of fun there, and we will have to go back soon, because we weren't able to see everything.

From what we did see though it was great! We saw log cabins:

Dressed up and in character employees:

We saw beautiful homes, like the Murdock house:

Ares was able to sit inside an actual stage coach that was used in Kansas:

Then we baled some hay:

After that we petted some cows. Ares and Ceridwen were scared of the cows at first, but Brigid wasn't! She's my little animal lover.

Ceridwen then rocked away on a front porch:

Brigid wanted to play with this dolly, but I wouldn't let her. She was sad:

Ares then took a lesson in cleanliness, and washed some laundry the old fashion way!

Next stop was the Saloon where Ares got his first sip of sarsaparilla.

Once we finished that it was time for a covered wagon ride! Ares was so excited, because the driver let Ares sit up front.

Then it was off to the jail, which was the first jail in Wichita. It was so tiny! I just wish we could have gone in one of the cells. Then it was back home!

On Friday, I babysat Kyle Ann's son Jude while they went to a wedding. I wanted Jude to be able to have some artwork to take home to his mommy so I had the kids make caterpillars! These were super easy to make, all you had to do was use the children's hands to make the caterpillar with the fingers pointing down for the legs.

What we weren't able to get done this week for "C" week was sidewalk chalk, making cookies (as you saw I substituted that with cake), and making a candle. I didn't do the candle from a lack of time, but because after I second guessed myself I realized it wouldn't be a good idea with a 5 year old to try, even with my help. I hope these "C" activities are right up your alley!
