"I" the Letter of the Week

Our letter of the week is "I"! We went over words with the letter "I", and Ares and I discussed the difference between the long "I" sound and the short "I" sound, and what words had the these sounds. For our science project this week we made ice cream in a bag. I got this idea from my friend Hannah that I used to work because she had done this with our daycare kids.

What you need:
2 sandwich size bags
2 Gallon Ziploc bags
1/2 cup milk
1 tablespoon of sugar
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
1/2 cup of rock salt

1.) Add milk, sugar, and vanilla into a sandwich bag. (Note: I used gallon sized bag because I didn't have the sandwich bags, and I think it would have turned out better if I had used sandwich bags.)

2.) Get all of the air out and then seal the bag. Place your filled bag into another sandwich-sized baggie and seal.

3.) Put your double-bag inside of a gallon-sized baggie and add your ice and rock salt.  Place this bag inside another gallon-sized bag.

4.) Shake for about 20-30 minutes passing it along to other people in the family. Kyle ended up shaking it for the majority of the time because he's awesome like that. :)

5.) Enjoy!

Our art project of the week was to make igloos.

What you'll need:
Plastic cups cut in half
Paper plate
Marshmallows
Frosting (or glue)

1.) Cover the cups that were cut in half with frosting. You could use glue, but I chose frosting because the twins are still at a point where they stick everything in their mouth, and I didn't want them eating the glue. Brigid needed help covering the cup with frosting so Ares helped her, but Ceri was insistent on doing it herself, and she did a good job.

2.) Cover frosted cup with marshmallows.

Brigid was more interested in sneaking marshmallows than decorating her igloo, but Ceri and Ares were more interested in decorating theirs. This is the final product!

For our exploration destination we went ice skating with my sister Lindsey. Ares had spent all of the spring and summer of 2012 taking ice skating lessons, and was actually quite good. He didn't like it though so we tried other activities instead. This was the first time he'd been skating for almost a year, and he liked it much better. The girls even tried their hand at skating, and looked like they really enjoyed it!
