Sharpie Tie Dye

Back when I worked for a daycare I went to a conference at K-State where the guest speaker was a woman known as the Ooblick Lady. She had a ton of ideas for art projects for kids! One of these art projects was making tie dye shirts by using Sharpies and rubbing alcohol. It is very simple, less messy than the regular form of tie dye, and my kids loved it!

What you'll need:
  • Colored Sharpies (we stayed away from brown and black)
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Eye dropper
  • Rubber bands
  • Plastic cups
I had Ares do the art project first while his sisters were taking a nap. Since I didn't have rubber bands I ended up using hair ties that I had around the house. Luckily it worked just the same!

Next I twisted up his sleeves and tied them up. He then colored them, added the rubbing alcohol, and after it had dried it looked just like regular tie dye, it was very cool!

After the girls' woke up it was their turn to do theirs, and their Daddy was so nice to help them!

I then added "C" and "B" to the back of their shirts so that way we would remember whose was whose.

Now to make sure these colors don't bleed onto anybody else's clothes I washed these shirts individually on the Hot/Cold cycle just like you would do to any new red shirts so it wouldn't bleed on your other clothes.
